When Should You Consider IV Therapy?

At Dr. Renée Moran Medical Aesthetics in Newton Centre, MA, people often come to us as a last resort. They have tried everything to feel better but nothing has worked effectively without side effects. IV therapy can help with a number of problems without side effects. Keep reading to learn when you should consider this life-changing treatment.

When Should I Consider IV Therapy?

Perhaps the most advantageous aspect of IV therapy is its customizability. Whether you’re dehydrated from rowing 42,196 meters or you’re hungover from a long day of alcohol consumption, IV infusions have something to offer you. Now is the right time to consider this life-changing treatment. Here are just a few signs you could benefit from a therapy session today:

You’ve Undergone a Weight Loss Procedure

After a bariatric procedure, your body can’t absorb nutrients through food, drinks, and dietary supplements as efficiently as it could pre-op. Thus, depending on the technique used to perform your procedure, you may need to take up to five dozen supplements. This gets prohibitively expensive and cumbersome very quickly.

Part of the reason so much supplementation is required is even someone who hasn’t received a bariatric procedure can’t absorb nutrients through oral dietary supplements very effectively. With IV infusions, you may find, even after a bariatric procedure, you only need to take a couple of oral dietary supplements. It is impossible to imagine how much your quality of life will improve if you don’t have to take dozens of pills daily to remain healthy.

You have Been Diagnosed with Depression

Another sign an IV drip could benefit you is you are depressed. Depression is one of the most common signs of vitamin B-complex deficiency. You don’t need to pay a psychiatrist $120 an hour for a prescription you can’t afford to fill to try and improve your quality of life.

You don’t have to fight against the side effects of antidepressants, like unintended weight gain. You don’t have to force yourself out of bed every morning to exercise with the hope of getting a runner’s high. A dose of bioavailable B vitamin-complex can change your life for the better.

You have Been Diagnosed with Anxiety

Approximately one-fifth of Americans suffer from at least one type of anxiety according to research published by the Anxiety and Depression Association of America. In other words, an astonishing 40 million Americans have been diagnosed with social anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, or a form of post-traumatic stress disorder, such as PTSD-C. Have you been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, or believe you suffer from an anxiety disorder?

There is a good chance you are deficient in B-complex vitamins. A stronger case can be made for vitamin B-complex deficiency if you also have symptoms of depression or you have been diagnosed with a form of depression, such as major depressive disorder. Try IV infusions today to restore the levels of B-complex vitamins in your blood and take a long moment to reflect on how much clearer your mind feels.

You Get the Flu Annually

A sign you may be immunocompromised and could benefit greatly from regular IV drips is getting the flu annually. An even stronger case can be made that you are immunocompromised if you get your flu vaccine annually. Even if you’re not immunocompromised, your immune system can be boosted significantly with IV infusions designed to support an effective immune system.

Unfortunately, you are extremely susceptible to new illnesses when you are sick. Whenever your immune system detects a foreign invader, it works overtime to produce the right defenders. This results in an overtaxed immune system that is sluggish to recognize another foreign invader and mount a completely different defense that will handle the problem efficiently. We offer immune system infusions with vitamin C and other essential micronutrients.

You’re Sick

Now may be the appropriate time for an IV infusion if you are currently sick. If you can spread your illness to others, make an effort to not leave the house until you are out of the infectious phase of the illness. Have your groceries delivered, work remotely or take time off from work and wear a mask if you must leave the house to go to a doctor’s appointment.

That being said, IV infusions are great for people who can no longer spread a virus or other illness to others but still feel ill because the immune system is still working overtime. Chronic dehydration affects an astonishing percentage of Americans, and hydrating fluid requirements are much higher when you’re sick. Among the micronutrients we can include in your hydrating IV are zinc to help you recover significantly faster and vitamin D.

Your Muscles Spasm Uncontrollably

Uncontrollable muscle spasms are unfortunately common. Some people can’t operate a motor vehicle safely because their upper eyelids spasm uncontrollably and they can’t be sure they will be able to see effectively until they get to their destination.

Other people can’t sleep soundly throughout the night due to random back spasms. Still others fall when walking sometimes due to uncontrollable calf spasms. Muscle spasms often point to a nutritional deficiency. Nearly every case of muscle spasms is the result of low magnesium.

A Word on Magnesium

Even if your muscle spasms aren’t serious enough to affect your daily life significantly, you should take their occurrences seriously. If you are deficient in magnesium, you are probably living with other side effects that have become assimilated into your daily life. Magnesium regulates over 100 bodily functions, including your mood. An IV drip with this micronutrient will change your life for the better in ways you may not think possible.

For example, you may think you sleep fine and feeling tired after a night of rest is normal. After supplementing magnesium through an IV drip, you may fall asleep faster, stay asleep longer and wake up feeling refreshed. This can snowball into other positive changes, such as exercising more, eating healthier or feeling better mentally. Additionally, cognitive function and memory can improve once chronic sleep deprivation is treated.

You’re Hungover

You know you shouldn’t reach for a Bloody Mary when you wake up and feel hungover, but what else can you do? You feel miserable and a little liquor will help you come to terms with feeling miserable for a while. Instead of reaching for a small portion of alcohol to mask the symptoms of your hangover, consider an IV drip.

IV infusions are better for the treatment of hangovers than water. All of the symptoms of your hangover, from the sensitivity to light and splitting headache to irritability result from both dehydration and micronutrient deficiency. Alcohol is a toxin and your body responds to that toxin by flushing it out as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, as this occurs, the essential micronutrients being transported to various locations through your bloodstream is also flushed out.

A Note on IV Drips for Hangovers

You will start to feel the benefits of an IV drip for your hangover as soon as the infusion begins. As your body continues hydrating over the course of 45 minutes, you will feel continuously better.

Within 1.5 hours of your therapy session beginning, you will feel like a completely different person. Magnesium will relax aching muscles. B vitamins will give you energy and help you focus. You’ll feel so good you’ll want to continue making choices that are good for your body and mind.

You Anticipate Drinking Heavily Tonight

Your doctor has probably informed you of the recommended alcohol consumption limits provided by the CDC and AHA. Men should limit their daily alcohol consumption to two units. Women should limit their daily alcohol consumption to one unit. Daily alcohol consumption guidelines are much more useful than weekly alcohol consumption guidelines because it is clear that alcohol units can’t be “banked.”

In other words, the daily alcohol consumption limits make it clear that you shouldn’t drink your weekly units of alcohol in a night or two. However, we understand people sometimes plan to drink more than they should in a day. Although we do not condone binge drinking, we would prefer you to mitigate the risk of a hangover than suffer through muscle aches, dehydration, and irritability.

You Want to Burn Fat

B-complex vitamins, just like magnesium, are responsible for over 100 bodily functions. Among the physical and psychological mechanisms affected by B vitamin levels are your hunger and satiety hormones, the energy to exercise, and the mental fortitude to make good decisions. If you are deficient in at least one of the critical B vitamins, you may struggle to maintain your weight or melt away stubborn fat despite how much you want to lose or maintain body fat levels.

Now is the time to get an IV infusion if you have been successful on your weight loss journey in the past but have hit a plateau. B-complex vitamins will help you feel full, focused, and filled to the brim with the motivation you need to resume your successful weight loss journey. Additionally, you can benefit from IV nutritional therapy if you are beginning your weight loss journey and want a strong push in the right direction.

You Suffer from a Particular Malady

Some illnesses can be managed with drugs that can be taken orally or administered intramuscularly. Nevertheless, there are certain medical conditions that can only be treated by the intravenous injection of pharmaceuticals. If your primary care physician has asked you to take medication that doesn’t provide the intended benefits when taken in pill, tablet, or capsule form, ask if the intravenous administration of your medication could benefit you.

You Suffer from Chronic Migraines

Chronic migraines are another sign now is the ideal time to consider IV nutritional therapy. They help restore the ideal functionality of your brain by providing essential hydration, vitamins, and electrolytes. When a migraine strikes, mere rehydration isn’t remotely adequate to provide you with relief.

It is common to feel hopeless, believing they have no power to stop them in their tracks. With a migraine relief IV infusion, you can experience relief from your nausea and inflammation-triggered pain. You will once more be able to draw up your blinds, get back to work and cook dinner for your family.

It will give you a much more youthful look even while you make natural facial expressions.

It can also be used on other areas that can be common areas of concern when it comes to fine lines and wrinkles. It essentially blocks the nerve impulses that cause the lines and wrinkles due to facial expressions. The muscles become relaxed giving you that smooth, youthful look.

Areas that Can be Treated

This type of treatment can be used on multiple areas where it works with the muscle to relax them from the inside. If you do happen to have another area of concern that is not mentioned, please feel free to bring that up during your consultation as our experts will be able to tell you if you can benefit from this type of treatment if another could be helpful for your specific case and concerns.

Between the Brows

The Forehead Region

The forehead area is another part of the face where fine lines and wrinkles can form from making facial expressions over time. These lines and wrinkles can be mild, moderate, or even severe. Regardless of how deep or mild those lines and wrinkles are, this type of treatment can significantly fade them.

Around the Eye Area

The eye area is one of the first areas that typically begin to show signs of aging such as fine lines and wrinkles. They can cause the appearance of the face to look aged. With this type of simple, injectable treatment, those lines and wrinkles regardless of severity can be a thing of the past. This will give you that awake, youthful appearance.

Other Areas

If you do have other areas of concern please bring them up during your initial consultation as this type of injectable treatment may be able to help. Our experts want to make sure you get the most out of this type of treatment and get the results you want. Be sure to mention all of your problem areas, your goals, and your expectations, and our experts will work with you.

What to Expect During Treatment

After that, your treatment will be done. It really is that quick and easy! Once finished, you can go on about your day as you normally would. You do not have to worry about downtime or anything of that nature.

Our experts are trained to properly perform this type of injectable treatment so that it is totally safe and you can get the most out of it. Attempting this on your own could not only be painful, but it could also cause damage to your skin.

When it comes to this type of treatment or other types of treatments that are similar, it is never a good idea to take the DIY route. Always leave this kind of treatment to the professionals for your safety.

10. How Long Until I Will be Able to See My Results?

This treatment option is so great and a popular choice because you begin to see your results immediately. However, you will see the full spectrum of results in the 48 hours following treatment. The results appear quickly. Unlike other types of treatments that may be able to give you similar results, this type of treatment is going to give you those results fast!

11. How Long will My Results Last?

This may vary from person to person depending on a variety of factors. On average, the results of this type of injectable treatment can last for up to 6 months or perhaps even longer. After evaluating your particular case, our professionals may be able to give you a better approximation of how long you can expect your results to last.

12. How Long will my Treatment Take?

That is another wonderful part of this type of treatment. It is very quick, especially when compared to other types of treatments that might be able to give you results that are similar. The entire process will probably only take about 30 minutes from start to finish.

13. Can I have Multiple Areas Treated at the Same Time?

Absolutely. If you want to have the forehead region treated as well as the eye area, that is completely possible. This type of treatment is safe enough to be used on multiple areas at the same time. Dermaplaning FAQs: How Often Should You Get Treatment?

You’ve probably heard of dermaplaning and wondered how on earth “shaving” can benefit your face. At Dr. Renée Moran Medical Aesthetics in Newton Centre, MA, we want to set the record straight: this treatment is far more than shaving, delivering a range of benefits that can brighten your complexion and improve your skincare regimen.

How Often Should You Get Dermaplaning?

The body is not designed to remain stagnant. Instead, it constantly renews itself for optimal functioning, and the skin is no exception. A new surface layer of skin is created roughly every 30 days, and in this process, dead cells are shed. The goal is to promote constant health, and while this process is fairly amazing, it’s also not infallible. Some dead cells remain on the surface longer than they should, clogging pores and creating rough patches.

It is therefore best, in most cases, to have dermaplaning done every four to six weeks, in line with your natural cell turnover rate. Most patients then repeat these sessions as part of an ongoing regimen; doing so keeps skin looking smooth, healthy, and vibrant.

More Frequent Sessions

In some instances, we will deliver treatment sessions two weeks apart, especially for patients preparing for an important event. After this initial uptick, we then generally recommend a traditional schedule of once monthly. This will vary slightly on an individual basis, as not all bodies renew skin cells at exactly 30 days. To illustrate, that window can be as little as 25 days or as much as 45 days for people under 40.

As you might have guessed, cell turnover slows with age so that a person in their 50s experiences cell renewal roughly every 50 days. Likewise, this timeframe increases to every 60 days for patients in their 60s. The point is we’ll develop a plan during your consultation to ensure we allow the appropriate healing time between each session.

Why is Healing Time Necessary?

Dermaplaning – also known as epiblading and a scalpel facial – is a deep exfoliation technique. Many women choose this treatment to remove the vellus hairs (peach fuzz) on their faces. The point of vellus is to keep us warm and protect our skin, but facial hair can contribute to acne and prevent skincare products from going to work. In other words, facial hair isn’t necessarily wanted, especially with modern conveniences like indoor heating.

As you already know, epiblading eliminates dead skin cells, and in so doing, reveals fresh, new cells that aren’t yet accustomed to environmental exposure. This means they’re fragile, and removing them before they’re ready can seriously impair your skin. We therefore stick to a treatment schedule that aligns with your individual needs.

What Happens During a Scalpel Facial?

The technique is simple: we hold a medical-grade scalpel to your skin at a 45-degree angle. Then, with a gentle gliding motion, we move the scalpel across your face to remove surface debris. This is a completely pain-free treatment that many patients report as feeling pleasant. And the fresh, cleansed feeling that follows means your skin is finally breathing as it needs to.

How is this Different from Shaving with a Traditional Razor?

Other hair removal methods like waxing and threading aren’t useful for removing fine vellus hairs – the hair isn’t coarse enough for these techniques to grip. Laser similarly requires several sessions before permanent results develop, and although it’s well-suited to those with darker hair, it doesn’t work as well on blonde hairs. The ideal option is epiblading, with effects that reach beyond the surface of your skin for a well-rounded treatment.

Why, then, isn’t an at-home razor good enough? Any blade you purchase from a local store won’t be as sharp as a medical-grade scalpel. As you’re forced to press harder to remove fine hairs, you put yourself at risk for cuts and nicks that may scar. Last but not least, a scalpel is highly maneuverable, able to skim your facial contours with little effort. A razor must be moved in one direction and cannot provide the same precision.

Goes Beyond Hair Removal

In addition, epiblading goes deeper than shaving. For starters, you see an immediate brightening effect on the skin. And in terms of aesthetic treatments, this is perhaps the quickest and simplest therapy available, helping to:

  • Renew your complexion
  • Minimize fine lines
  • Reduce acne scarring
  • Restore your glow
  • Provide a softer texture
  • Smooth away dry skin to promote hydration

What to Expect During Treatment

We’ll use your consultation to assess your skin and screen for conditions that could rule out treatment (such as cystic acne). Once we know epiblading is appropriate for your needs, we’ll start your sessions by thoroughly cleaning and prepping your face. We’ll then proceed with the scalpel, gliding it across your face so that you might feel a tingling sensation.

Once the entire face is treated, we apply any products that we previously agreed could benefit you. These might include a soothing serum or protective sunscreen. You can expect the entire treatment to take about 30 minutes, and there’s no recovery after, so you’re free to continue with your day. All in all, this is a highly effective way to refresh your appearance.

Preparing for Your Session

We generally recommend patients stop all anti-aging and topical acne treatments three days before their appointment. These include retinoids and products that contain alpha or beta hydroxy acids. You should likewise skip exposure to UV rays both before and after your treatment to minimize your risk for a reaction.

Finally, you shouldn’t wax or use depilatory creams at least one week prior to treatment; these techniques also lift away dead cells and make your skin too sensitive for dermaplaning. On the day of your treatment, you should arrive with a clean face free of product and makeup. If you have an active cold sore or active acne, your session will likely need to be rescheduled.

Your Appearance after Treatment

We already mentioned the brilliant glow your skin will have after treatment. Keep in mind that healthy, hydrated skin reflects light in a way that makes you look soft and luminous. Your skin will also look smoother without vellus and dead cells; both can dull your complexion and contribute to an overall fatigued look.

While your skin will likely be more sensitive for a few days, you can relieve this by applying hydrating serums and moisturizers, avoiding sweating, and delaying vigorous exercise or heat exposure. You can likewise promote rapid healing by keeping your hands off your face; don’t pick your skin and pat rather than wipe your face dry after cleansing. And don’t forget the broad-spectrum sunscreen, which needs to be applied daily to prevent sun damage.

Ways to Extend Your Results

Although peach fuzz will grow back after a few weeks, you can care for your skin in a way that helps maintain your silky smooth results. Keep in mind sun damage is one of the biggest contributors to premature aging and dull skin. The sun can diminish your skin’s brightness and contribute to wrinkles, fine lines, and dark spots. This is why, in addition to wearing sunscreen, we recommend you don a wide-brimmed hat when outside.

Also stay hydrated. Water is nature’s moisturizer and can reduce the appearance of fine lines. It also plumps skin and relieves excessive dryness. Not drinking enough can make skin look puffy and lackluster.

Complement with Other Treatments

For broader results, you may consider complementing epiblading with other therapies. Dermal fillers, for example, can smooth away deeper wrinkles and restore volume in key areas like the temples and cheeks. Neuromodulators can similarly relax muscles to diminish fine lines in the forehead and around the mouth. By pairing different treatments, you can enjoy an altogether more appearance.

Benefits of Epiblading

For many women, smoother makeup application is at the top of this list. From beauty blending sponges to pore-minimizing primers, we’re always looking for ways to get the most flawless finish possible. But the truth is this starts with our skin. Peach fuzz and patches of dry skin can interrupt makeup application and lead to a cakey, uneven appearance. Once we remove these factors from the equation, makeup is able to sit directly on the skin so it blends easily.

Better Product Penetration

Just as makeup can sit ineffectively on top of dead cells and facial hair, skincare products can do the same. The skin itself is a naturally waterproof barrier that can be tough to get past. This is a biological advantage to keep out harmful bacteria and toxins. But skincare products, which we want to penetrate to deeper tissues, have an especially difficult time squeezing past surface debris.

Removing skin’s top layer is a priority for ensuring effective skincare. Once it’s gone, products can sink into thirsty tissues and deliver the nutrients and hydration they need. This means you’re making the best use of all those moisturizers, serums, and deep cleansers you’ve purchased.

Fewer Acne Scars

Scars result from skin cell build-up following a unique pattern of inflammation. Epiblading can therefore remove these in much the same way as it sweeps away fine lines: by removing damaged cells and replacing them with those that are healthy. Although the efficacy of this depends on the severity of the scar and your overall complexion, we can at least reduce the appearance of scarring to give you smoother and more supple skin.

Acne scars benefit the most from dermaplaning; these concerns appear in the form of dark spots and enlarged pores and can develop at any age. The goal, then, is to help even out your tone so you look younger and more vibrant.

Collagen Production

Once we exfoliate your skin’s uppermost layer, we “trick” the body into thinking damage has occurred. This is important because it triggers natural healing mechanisms, which in this case means more collagen production. Collagen repairs the skin by lifting and plumping tissues. It also serves as the underlying structure that skin sits upon, giving your face its unique fullness and definition.

Collagen levels wane as early as age 25, so using cosmetic treatments to ramp up production can stave off and/or correct common signs of aging. It is especially beneficial for erasing fine lines and wrinkles.

A Multi-Faceted Facial

We rarely think of scalpels as delivering facials, but in the case of epiblading, they do just that. The effects are multi-faceted, ranging from a brighter complexion to fewer scars. It’s safe for nearly all patients, takes little time, and doesn’t require an arduous recovery period. Contact us today at Dr. Renée Moran Medical Aesthetics in Newton Centre, MA.

How Long Does Botox Last?

The natural process of aging can bring about wrinkles and fine lines. Many people find that they are unhappy with these and seek out a solution that doesn’t require invasive surgeries or expensive creams. With Botox, you can get rid of those fine lines and wrinkles without any surgery or extensive recovery time. Here at Dr. Renée Moran Medical Aesthetics in  Newton Centre, MA, we can help!

Botox is a non-surgical, non-invasive, injectable treatment that can reduce various signs of aging, including crow’s feet, frown lines, forehead lines, smile lines, marionette lines, and more. It is injected directly into the problem area and works from within to significantly diminish the appearance of lines and wrinkles.

It works by preventing the muscles beneath from contracting, thereby eliminating the cause of the lines and wrinkles. It also stops deeper lines and wrinkles from forming by preventing those nerve signals from causing those muscles to contract. Because lines and wrinkles come about from our natural facial expressions, they are a common concern for many.

With this FDA-approved injectable, the appearance of those lines and wrinkles will no longer be an issue! You can have that smooth, youthful appearance back without invasive surgeries or recovery time. It is an option that is both simple and effective.

How Long Does it Last?

The results of this type of treatment are going to last up to six months. The amount of time that the effects of this treatment will last may be shorter or longer depending on the specific case. However, once the wonderful results do begin to fade around the 6-month mark, you can return to safely have this injectable treatment again.

During your personalized consultation, our experts will be able to give you a clearer picture of how long you can expect your specific results to last. Although typically, the results will be present for around 6 months or a little bit longer in most cases. That’s significantly longer than most other types of treatments.

What to Expect During Treatment

This type of treatment is very quick when compared to virtually any other type. They are also very simple treatments. The area of concern or concerns will be addressed and treated with an injection. There isn’t any pain and most people experience only a slight pinching sensation during injection.

Because this type of treatment is so quick and simple, you can get right back to your daily routine immediately after. There is absolutely no downtime. You simply come into the office, have the quick treatment, and enjoy the benefits quickly.

How to Know if You’re a Good Candidate

If you are an adult who isn’t happy with those fine lines and wrinkles, chances are that you’re a perfect candidate for this type of treatment. During your initial consultation, our experts will work with you to ensure that you’re going to get the most out of this type of treatment and whether or not your specific issues can be treated in this way.

For the most part, any healthy adult who has issues with fine lines or wrinkles will be a good candidate for Botox.

Commonly Asked Questions

1. Will it Hurt?

No, there is no pain associate with this type of treatment. 2. Is it Safe?

Botox is totally safe and approved by the FDA.

3. Which Areas Can I Have Treated?

Typically, this type of treatment is used on frown lines, forehead lines, smile lines, marionette lines, and in the areas where crow’s feet can become prevalent. However, it can also be used on the neck and jawline, to smooth the appearance of any lines or wrinkles there.

If there are other problem areas that you would like to have treated, you can bring those up during your consultation with one of our experts and they will decide as to whether or not this type of treatment is going to be helpful in those areas.

4. How Long Until I See the Results?

However, at the 5-day mark, most see the full spectrum of their results.

5. Will it Change the Appearance of My Face?

Unlike other types of treatments that are going to be more surgical in nature and can alter the appearance of your face, this type of treatment is simply going to diminish the appearance of those fine lines and wrinkles. Because it is an injectable, it isn’t going to alter the shape of your face or totally alter your appearance.

Simply put, this type of injectable treatment option targets only those problem areas that you want to have targetted. Outside of that, nothing about your face is going to change other than giving your skin a smoother, more youthful appearance.

6. How Often Will I Need to Have Treatment?

This is going to vary on a person to person basis. Depending on the type of results you are seeking and how long you want them to last, you may want to have treatment more or less frequently than another person. However, the overall results will last for up to 6 months, so it is typical to have this treatment every 6 months to keep up with the full spectrum of the results.

However, the results of this type of treatment can also last longer for some and shorter for others. It’s all going to depend on your expectations and your specific case as to how often you will need to have treatment.

7. What About Recovery Time?

There is no recovery time needed for this type of treatment which is why many more people are opting for it over invasive surgeries that do require downtime. This type of treatment is perfect for those with a busy lifestyle who don’t have the time to recover. With this type of injectable treatment, there is no recovery time at all!

Immediately following treatment, you can go ahead with your daily routine. There is no downtime, bed rest, or healing time needed as there would be with most surgeries. After leaving the office, you can do anything you would normally do.

8. What Do I Have to Do to Prepare for Treatment?

Typically, there are no steps that you need to take prior to treatment. One of our experts will take a look at your case specifically during your consultation prior to treatment and would let you know if there is anything you need to do before you come into the office for treatment. However, there is usually no preparation needed before having this type of treatment.

9. How Do I Care for My skin After Treatment?

After treatment, it is best to avoid the sun for up to 48 hours or use sunscreen if avoiding the sun isn’t an option. It’s also recommended to avoid tanning beds. However, other than that, you can go back to your daily skincare regimen unless told otherwise by one of our experts. If there would be any type of additional care that you would need to do, we will let you know.

Usually, there are no additional steps needed to care for your skin after having this type of treatment.

10. Is this Treatment Only for Women?

No, anybody, who has fine lines and wrinkles they would rather see diminished can benefit from this type of treatment. Both men and women can enjoy the extraordinary results this type of injectable treatment can offer.

11. How Long Does Treatment Take?

This type of treatment is incredibly quick and simple as compared to other types of treatments that give you similar results. This treatment will only take about 15 minutes at the longest! The amount of time that this treatment will take may also be less than that, depending on how many injections you will be receiving and the wait time in the office.

12. How Many Injections Will I Need?

This is also going to vary on a case to case basis depending on how many areas you want to have treated. During the consultation process, we will let you know how many injections to expect to ensure that you will be receiving the best results from this treatment. On average, most people receive between 3-5 injections, but that number can vary.

13. Can I Just Do it at Home?

It is never recommended attempting to do any type of injectable at home. DIY treatments of this nature can be incredibly dangerous and can cause permanent damage to your skin. Our experts are trained to perform this type of treatment safely and effectively so there is no need to attempt this type of treatment on your own.

14. Will I Look Unnatural?

As mentioned before, this type of treatment simply diminishes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and will not change your face. It will only give you smooth, more youthful skin that will appear very natural. Unlike other treatments, this type will not give you an unnatural look at all.

Instead, this type of treatment is only going to target the areas that you want targeted and get rid of the fine lines and wrinkles that you don’t want. It isn’t going to add unnecessary fillers in areas that would cause your face to appear unnatural. As far as treatments of this kind go, Botox is going to give you one of the most natural finished looks.

What is Botox Used for?

Botox is an injectable treatment for wrinkles and skin conditions. It is derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It is used in small doses to weaken or temporarily paralyze muscles that are responsible for facial wrinkles and irregularities in the skin. The injection slides into the muscle under the skin in the area that requires treatment, and the result is reduced muscle movement and therefore less wrinkling.

This treatment has been proven to be effective and is trusted by millions of men and women all over the world.

History of Facial Treatments

People have been trying to fight the signs of aging for many years. In Ancient Egypt, Cleopatra took baths in donkey’s milk to keep her skin smooth and creamy, and women during Elizabethian times placed raw meat on their faces to discourage wrinkles. In more recent times, a number of creams, powders, and lotions have hit the market promising to make skin look younger and wrinkles disappear. Some of these experiments offered small benefits, and some were pointless.

Today’s approach to signs of aging is based on modern technology and science, backed by testing and research. Thankfully we no longer have to rely on folk remedies or other fads to get the best treatments for skin changes caused by aging.

FAQ: Where did Botox Come From?

This treatment comes from the botulism toxin that is responsible for the botulism disease that causes paralysis, and it can naturally be found in soil. Because it is derived from this toxin, some people assume that the injection is unsafe. This is not the case at all. Medical injections contain a non-harmful amount of the bacteria that is created from only 2 strands of Clostridium botulinum out of the 7 that exist.

Who is a Good Candidate?

When you come in for a consultation to talk about any concerns you have about your skin, we will ask you some questions to determine if this is the right treatment for you. We will ask you for your medical history, including any medications you are taking or health issues you are currently handling. We will also ask if you are a smoker and some general questions about your lifestyle.

We will ask you about any previous skin treatments you have had in the past and how you felt about the results. We will also need to know if you are allergic to anything.

What Causes Wrinkles?

Changes in the skin happen naturally as people age, and several factors work together at once to create the total results. A majority of wrinkles and creases in the face are caused simply by using the same muscles repeatedly over many years. This happens when you move, speak, and make certain facial expressions. The more you use these muscles, the deeper and more intense the wrinkles can get.

Another factor in aging skin is the loss of hyaluronic acid, a substance that naturally occurs in the skin and is responsible for attracting moisture that keeps skin elastic and plump. As this substance decreased over time, the skin becomes loose. The result is that lines, creases, and folds will appear.

Which Facial Areas Does it Treat?

Forehead Wrinkles

Forehead wrinkles are the horizontal lines that appear on your forehead when you make certain facial expressions that move the skin on the top area of your face. The muscle injected is called the Fontalis Muscle, and several injections are typically needed to cover the whole area.

Frown Lines

Frown lines are vertical lines that show up in between your eyebrows when you frown. They are also sometimes referred to as 11s because of their shape. To treat frown lines, several injections are given to the Corrugator Supercilli and Procerus muscles.

Crow’s Feet

Crow’s feet, or lateral orbital lines, are caused by the Orbicularis Oculi and Procerus muscles. They are small wrinkles on the outside corners of the eyes, and they are most visible when you smile.

Bunny Lines

Bunny lines are little wrinkles around your nose that occur when you scrunch up your face like a bunny rabbit. These lines appear over your lifetime, but they are deeper and more pronounced as you age.

Smoker’s Lines

Also called Peri-oral lines, these are the wrinkles that show up around your mouth when you purse your lips together. These wrinkles are common among smokers because of the facial expression necessary for smoking a cigarette. The muscle responsible for this is the Orbicularis Oris muscle. Injections are placed into each line.

Marionette Lines

These are the wrinkles that run vertically down the sides of your mouth toward your chin. They are controlled by 2 different muscles, the Anguli Oris and Trangularis muscles.

Chin Wrinkles

Wrinkles, dimples, or dents can show up in the chin area. These are more common in some people than others, but they can become quite deep. They are also referred to as mentalis dysfunction and treatment is injected into the mentalis muscle. The treatment relaxes the muscle and makes the dent soften or disappear.

Vertical Platysma Bands

These are vertical lines that occur in the neck area. They are sometimes called cords, and they run down the sides of the neck. Relaxing the muscles around these bands can cause them to fade.

Brow Lift

This treatment involves an injection in the outer part of the eyebrow to create the appearance of the eyebrow lifting. This makes the eyes look more awake and open, creating a more youthful appearance.

Are there Any Non-Facial Uses?

Crossed Eyes

Clostridium botulinum can temporarily fix crossed eyes, or strabismus, in the same manner that it is used cosmetically. When it is injected into the eye, the eye muscles relax, and crossed eyes are temporarily gone. This is helpful to people of all ages who suffer from insecurity and ridicule because of crossed eyes.

Excessive Sweating

Hyperhydrosis or Hyperhidrosis is a condition where people sweat excessively and uncontrollably.  Acetylcholine is a chemical that engages the sweat glands. When muscles around the sweat glands are injected with Botox, the glands do not release this chemical, and sweating does not occur. Injections for this purpose can be given in the armpits, in the palms of the hands, or on the bottom of the feet.

Migraines

Botulism toxin injections have changed the lives of people living with chronic migraines by providing an effective solution to this painful problem. The treatment involves 31 injections in specific areas around the head and neck. The result is fewer or no migraines

Neuropathic Pain

Injections can also be used to treat people with pain caused by neuropathy. When nerves in extremities die due to injury or disease, intense pain can result in those areas. Botulism injections can block the pain signals to these nerves.

Depression

When researchers saw that people being injected with Clostridium botulinum were reported a decrease in symptoms of depression, they began to do studies. It turns out that injections can cause a dip in depression-related problems.

How is it Administered?

One treatment session typically includes between 1 and 3 injections, although the specific number of injections depends on the size of the area being treated. The injection is targeted to the muscle responsible for movement in that area. A microneedle is used to place a small amount of the treatment under the skin.

The toxin goes into the muscle and stops a neurotransmitter called the acetylcholine from being released. The acetylcholine is what allows the muscles to create movement. Without this, muscle movement stops. Injections are given in a medical office, and the entire appointment takes just a few minutes. Patients walk out of the office that day and are free to resume normal activities.

What are the Benefits?

Safe and Effective

Clostridium botulinum injections are completely safe and pose no risk to your health. They are also extremely effective, delivering results that you can depend on. This makes them a treatment that many patients come back for time after time.

Non-Surgical

It is always excellent to find a cosmetic treatment that does not involve surgery. You do not need to visit a hospital for these injections, and you avoid the risks that come from being in surgery. You also avoid time and energy spent in recovery.

Affordable

Botox is one of the most affordable cosmetic treatments you can find. Considering how powerful and effective these injections are, they are a terrific value.

Quick

Appointments for treatment take very little time, Depending on the number of injections needed for your particular issue, you may spend as little as 15 minutes in the doctor’s office.

No Recovery

Once your appointment is over, you can move right on to the next responsibility or meeting of your day. Many patients get their treatments during their lunch hour or in between work responsibilities.

Confidence

The greatest benefit of Botox is that it gives you the confidence of knowing that you look amazing. When you know you look younger and stronger, you will naturally carry yourself with more confidence and self-assurance. This leads to better work productivity and social success.

When Will I See Results?

It takes a little bit of time for neurotoxins to start blocking the signals in the nerves and muscles. You can expect to start to see changes within 3-5 days, but it will be closer to a week before the full results are obvious. If you don’t have sufficient results after 2 weeks, you can always come in for a touchup treatment.

How Long do Treatments Last?

The timeline of results varies among different people. The area treated, the depth and intensity of your wrinkles, and your own metabolism all play a part in determining how long the treatment will last. In general, you can expect the results to last between 3 and 4 months. For some patients, results last around 2 months and others see results lasting 6 months.

Where Can I Learn More?

Botox is an amazing discovery in the world of cosmetic injectables, and patients are thrilled with the results. Looking younger leads to feeling more energized, and the confidence that our clients get from this treatment can be life-changing. If you’d like to know more about what these treatments can do for you, please contact us at Dr. Renée Moran Medical Aesthetics in Newton Centre, MA. We love helping people like you discover ways to look great and feel fantastic.

How Can You Get Rid of Stubborn Fat? A Closer Look at CoolSculpting

Have you lost a lot of weight and are now struggling to lose those last few stubborn pounds? Losing weight isn’t easy, and the body doesn’t always respond in the way we want it to. Stubborn pockets of diet and exercise-resistant fat can be exceedingly difficult to deal with. CoolSculpting treatment at Dr. Renée Moran Medical Aesthetics in Newton Center, MA, can address this and provide you with the body contour you’re looking for.

How Can You Get Rid of Stubborn Fat? A Closer Look at CoolSculpting: What is It?

CoolSculpting, or cryolipolysis, is an FDA-approved body-contouring treatment that can successfully reduce the volume of fat cells in certain parts of your body. It does so by freezing fat cells, causing them to first crystallize and then die off.

Your body will naturally dispose of the dead fat cells through your urine, leaving the treated area with a more sculpted, sleeker appearance. Cryolipolysis is one of the few technologies that was discovered unintentionally. Researchers were performing an experiment involving children and popsicles when they realized that the popsicles were causing children to form dimples.

As the phenomenon was studied, scientists came to the conclusion that the cold was freezing the fat cells within the children’s cheeks – leading to the formation of dimples. Researchers eventually concluded that the phenomenon can effectively help people lose stubborn fat.

How is the Treatment Performed?

Unlike other body contouring procedures, Cryolipolysis is 100% non-invasive. There are no incisions or needles involved in the treatment. Treatment is performed at our office and generally takes anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour to complete.

The duration of treatment depends on how many areas a client is looking to treat. CoolSculpting has been approved by the FDA for treatment in numerous locations around your body.

Treatment involves a paddle-shaped applicator which employs suction to align the underlying fat with the paddles. Then, the skin is cooled to a temperature that freezes fat cells but leaves the surrounding tissue unharmed.

How is Surrounding Tissue Protected?

The treatment is able to target fat but not the surrounding tissue due to the fact that fat freezes at higher temperatures than your skin does.

Because of this, applying a specific temperature to a targeted location on your body results in fat being affected and little else. You’ll feel a cool, but not uncomfortable, sensation during treatment.

What Type of Fat Does Cryolipolysis Target?

The two types of fat your body has in abundance are subcutaneous fat and visceral fat. Visceral fat is firm to the touch and sits deep within the body where it serves as protection for your vital organs.

Subcutaneous fat, by name, means fat that sits beneath your skin. Diet and exercise typically target visceral fat – often resulting in pockets of exercise and diet-resistant subcutaneous fat in your abdomen, flanks, upper arms, thighs, back, etc.

Cryolipolysis targets subcutaneous fat as opposed to visceral fat and is highly effective at redefining your contours through destroying=

Is Cryolipolysis a Weight Loss Solution?

Unfortunately, the treatment was not designed to help people lose large amounts of weight. Instead, cryolipolysis is intended to be the “finishing touch” after you lose weight through diet and exercise.

CoolSculpting provides the best results when someone is at or near their ideal weight but is dissatisfied with how the results affect the contours of their body.

Is the Fat Removal Permanent?

Everyone has a certain amount of fat cells in their body. Just how many is determined by genetics, though most people stop developing new fat cells in their mid-20s. When someone gains weight, they don’t generate new fat cells – the cells they have inflated. When weight is lost, the opposite occurs.

When fat is destroyed via cryolipolysis, it does not come back. This fat loss is permanent. However, that doesn’t mean the leftover cells can’t inflate if you gain weight. When this inflation occurs, it can impact the treated area and leave you with a less satisfying shape. After treatment, it’s best to continue with a diet and exercise routine that keeps your weight from fluctuating more than a few pounds.

What are the Benefits of CoolSculpting?

Treatment is customized to your stated cosmetic goals.

Where, and how much, subcutaneous fat accumulates around your body is largely due to genetics, and not every patient has the same needs. One patient may want to treat their abdomen, while another chooses to treat their upper arms. Weight loss stemming from diet and exercise does not spot-target fat, no matter what you’ve heard. Instead, diet and exercise prompt fat loss from all over your body.

While diet and exercise cannot “spot target” fat, CoolSculpting can. As a matter of fact, the treatment was developed for this specific purpose.

It’s Far Less Expensive than Surgery

Non-invasive treatments like CoolSculpting lack the pain and recovery time associated with cosmetic surgery. Since the treatment is non-invasive, less work is required by your provider and, as a result, the treatment ends up costing less than surgical procedures normally would.

When you undergo surgery, you have to pay the surgeon’s fee, OR fee, anesthesia fee, etc. None of these extra services are necessary to achieve fat removal through cryolipolysis.

It’s Low Risk

One of the scariest things about surgery is the risk involved with invasive procedures. Clients with more comprehensive cosmetic goals frequently require surgical procedures. Even relatively minor surgeries can carry a certain amount of risk.

Cryolipolysis is far less risky than other, traditional options because it’s non-invasive. You won’t need to be anesthetized because of the pain, nor will you need to worry about infections. The surface of your skin is not punctured during treatment – it’s cooled.

It’s Known to Achieve Excellent Results

When a client makes a conscious choice to undergo treatment, it’s important that they are aware of its limitations. As mentioned, treatment isn’t an alternative to diet and exercise, nor will it remove large amounts of fat from your body.

However, the treatment has produced excellent results when used to “spot target” specific areas of your body. Provided you understand what treatment can and cannot do, you should be more than satisfied with your results.

Treatment is Quick

Other “spot targeting” options, such as liposuction, require a certain amount of time commitment from patients. Preparation alone can take a couple hours, and then you have the procedure itself and the recovery period it requires. You could find yourself unable to perform your normal daily tasks for a few weeks after your liposuction.

Cryolipolysis is a much faster way to target stubborn pockets of fat. Each treatment area takes about 30 minutes to complete, though larger areas may take a little longer. With such a short treatment period, many clients choose to come in on their lunch breaks or in between errands. Some clients even work while being treated! Treatment is so mild you can make phone calls, send emails, or read while being treated. Once treatment is complete, you can continue with the rest of your day.

Additional Treatment Areas are Being Approved by the FDA

CoolSculpting is so effective at “spot treating” unwanted, diet and exercise-resistant fat that additional treatment areas seemingly achieve FDA approval all the time. Since 2010, when the treatment was first cleared by the FDA, additional treatment areas have subsequently gained approval as well. Today, you can treat your thighs, abdomen, submental fat (double chin), flanks (love handles), back, bra bulge, under the buttocks, and upper arms.

Many of these areas are notorious for accumulating exercise and diet-resistant fat cells. As time goes on, additional areas will undoubtedly be cleared as well.

Treatment Doesn’t Hurt

The non-invasive nature of the treatment, as well as the relatively mild temperatures applied to your body, leaves the majority of your cells unharmed (the exception being subcutaneous fat cells). Treatment is pain-free, though you may experience some mild redness post-treatment. This redness tends to dissipate shortly after treatment.

Is it Possible to Maximize your Results?

When a person chooses to undergo cosmetic treatments to improve their appearance, it pretty much goes without saying that they’ll want the best results possible. As mentioned, treatment is not an alternative to diet and exercise if you’re looking to shed significant pounds. But, the fat that is removed via treatment is gone forever. You will lose weight after treatment as fat cells are destroyed and removed. The weight, though, will be limited to a few pounds.

Clients who are happiest with their results generally maintain a healthy lifestyle before and after treatment. If you’ve just lost a significant amount of weight, it can benefit you to hold off on treatment for a few months while you work on stabilizing your weight. The last thing you want to do is undergo treatment without the discipline to continue living a healthy lifestyle. Below are a few practices you can employ to help maximize your results and improve their longevity.

Continue Exercising and Eating Healthy

Achieving your weight loss goal, or at least being within reach, through diet and exercise isn’t easy, and you should feel good about yourself for doing so. Just because you’ve reached your weight loss goal doesn’t mean you no longer need to continue with your current exercise and diet regimen.

To maximize your results, make sure to continue exercising and eating a healthy diet. You may not need to diet and exercise as intensely as you did while losing weight, but continuing to exercise and watch what you eat will help keep your figure.

Get Enough Sleep

Losing out on sleep is a major contributor to premature aging, and it can crater your metabolism. Experts recommend getting 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night, and you should strive to do just that. Granted, life doesn’t always allow us as much time to sleep as we like and missing a few hours here and there is unavoidable.

Sleep deprivation can also seriously affect your mood. People who don’t regularly get enough sleep tend to be moody, emotional, and quick-tempered. A lack of sleep can also be detrimental to your diet and exercise regimen as it gnaws away at your willpower.

Are You a Candidate for Treatment?

The treatment’s non-invasive nature makes it widely available and popular among those looking to improve their physique. Clients who are near their target weight, are tired of looking at stubborn pockets of fat around their body and are generally healthy make excellent candidates for treatment.

CoolSculpting helps get rid of stubborn exercise and diet-resistant fat by cooling fat cells to a point where they die off and are eliminated by the body. The surrounding tissues remain unharmed and unaffected due to the fact that they freeze at higher temperatures than the fat cells underneath.

If you’re sick and tired of being unsatisfied with your appearance, and you think cryolipolysis may be the answer, contact us to schedule a consultation with Dr. Renée Moran Medical Aesthetics in Newton Center, MA.

Will My Skin Sag after CoolSculpting?

Are you eager to slim down problem areas that have resisted diet and exercise but are worried you’ll be left with sagging skin? CoolSculpting, a non-invasive treatment that freezes away fat, contours the body in a way that doesn’t leave excess skin behind. Dr. Renée Moran Medical Aesthetics in Newton Centre, MA, offers this innovative treatment, which is a non-surgical alternative to liposuction.

Sagging skin can be a problem for patients who have lost a significant amount of weight or for those who have turned to liposuction to address a problem like belly fat or extra weight in the outer thighs. But CoolSculpting, because it gets rid of only a small amount of unwanted fat and does so by encouraging the body to naturally flush away those fat cells, does not leave frustrating excess skin behind.

The Magic of CoolSculpting

This non-invasive treatment relies on a process known as cryolipolysis, which basically means the fat cells in the targeted area are frozen to death. During treatment, an applicator is placed against the area of the body that’s of concern and deeply cools it, causing those fat cells to break down.

In the weeks,  skin after coolsculpting treatment, the body’s lymphatic system will gradually and naturally dispose of those fat cells. Most appointments last about 35 minutes, and patients are able to get right back to their regular schedules immediately. This convenient treatment can even be done on your lunch break.

How Many Treatments will I Need?

For some patients, a single treatment will give them the results they’re looking for. For other patients, particularly those who want to treat a larger area or want to more aggressively rid the body of unwanted fat, a series of treatments may be recommended.

We work with patients to develop a customized treatment series that will address their cosmetic goals and concerns. Patients who undergo a series of treatments are urged to schedule their appointments at least 4 months apart so their results will fully develop after each session.

Some of our patients have been so pleased with their results that they return after their initial treatment series to have another area of concern addressed.

What Areas Does this Treatment Address?

This treatment can be used to reduce unwanted fat on the flanks, abdomen, neck, arms, and thighs. It can even be used to treat small areas where volume has begun to develop, such as under the chin or along the bra line.

Are the Results Permanent?

This treatment permanently destroys fat cells in the area you’re concerned about, which means your problem spot is gone for good. Once you’ve achieved the results you want, you won’t have to worry about maintenance treatments to keep up your look.

You will, however, want to maintain a healthy lifestyle, because this treatment won’t prevent you from gaining weight in the future.

Will My Skin Sag after CoolSculpting?

Sometimes patients are dismayed to find that after working hard to shed a significant amount of weight, or perhaps after undergoing a more invasive and aggressive fat removal treatment, they are left with loose, sagging skin that gets in the way of the great results they have achieved. One of the nice things about CoolSculpting is that you won’t have to worry about that happening.

Here’s why:

Your Results will Develop Gradually

The results you get from each treatment will develop during the 5 to 12 weeks after your appointment. Patients like the gradual onset of their results, because it never means the suddenly look like they went and had a cosmetic treatment done. Those gradual results also mean that your skin has time to adjust and conform incrementally to your new shape.

The Fat Reduction is Modest

The other reason why sagging skin is not a concern is that this treatment is designed to achieve a modest reduction in fat. Patients generally love their results and find that the troublesome spot or two they’ve been struggling with is slimmed down or even gone. But the actual amount of fat reduction is fairly modest.

This treatment is ideal for patients who are in generally good shape but who have a spot or two that simply won’t go away no matter how hard they diet and exercise. In other words, it’s great for attacking problematic areas for improved body contour, but it’s not a way to lose a large amount of weight.

What Other Benefits does this Treatment Offer?

In addition to its ability to beat back unwanted fat without resulting in sagging skin, this treatment offers a number of benefits.

A Non-Surgical Alternative

For years, cosmetic surgery or liposuction was the primary option for patients with stubborn areas that resist diet and exercise. But CoolSculpting makes it possible to beat back those problem spots without the downtime and commitment involved with surgery. This treatment is fast, painless, and requires no recovery, so patients are able to easily work their appointments into a busy schedule.

Long-Lasting, Natural Results

This treatment offers results that will last you a lifetime. And because your results will develop gradually as your body’s lymphatic system disposes of the destroyed fat cells, your new look will be completely natural in appearance. You’ll look as though you’ve been working, successfully, at getting in shape.

Better Body Contour

Even though it removes a small amount of fat, most patients are amazed at how great their body looks once that stubborn spot or two is gone. This body contouring system works wonders because it makes it possible to get rid of the curves you don’t want while keeping the ones you love.

The end result is a sleek, sculpted, and attractive silhouette that you can feel proud of. You’ll be amazed at how much better you feel about your body once you’ve undergone treatment. Clothes will fit better, being active will be easier, and you’ll feel happier and more confident.

Use All Over the Body

This versatile treatment system can be used to address problem spots all over the body. It can also be used to achieve varying degrees of fat removal.

Whether you want to treat a large area with a lot of room for improvement or simply want to remove a little extra unwanted fat from a small area, this treatment can help. This system can be used to offer each patient customized results.

A Great Option for Men and Women

Male and female patients tend to have different types of fat, and they store fat in different places on their bodies, but this body contouring treatment is highly effective for both genders. Women tend to have more fibrous fat, and it is more likely to develop in the hips and legs.

Men often have body fat that is firmer, and more to be concentrated around the belly. These treatments can attack both types of fat and can work in all of the areas both men and women are likely to struggle with.

It’s a Safe Option

This treatment system was cleared by the FDA in 2010, and it has been widely and safely used on all skin types and tones in the years since.

What Can I Expect During Treatment?

If you’re considering this approach to body contouring, you’re probably wondering exactly what’s involved in the treatments. But you can rest assured that these non-invasive treatments are nothing to worry about.

We’ll start by cleaning the skin and making a few marks on the skin that will ensure we’re targeting the right area once we begin. The CoolSculpting applicator will then be placed against your body and the treatment will begin. Patients often feel chilliness as well as light pressure, but the treatment is easy and comfortable, and patients frequently spend their time reading or napping.

Once we’ve finished with the applicator, we massage the treatment area, which helps break up any tissues that have become tight because of the cold. The massage also jumpstarts the body’s process of flushing away those fat cells.

Am I a Good Candidate?

The best way to find out if you’re a good candidate for this innovative treatment is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Renée Moran. Dr. Moran earned her doctoral degree in osteopathic medicine from Midwestern University and bachelor of arts degrees in pre-medicine and psychology from Boston College.

She completed postdoctoral training in anesthesiology and pain medicine at Saint Elizabeth’s Medical Center and a research fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Moran has a passion for facial aesthetics and strives to give her patients natural results that enhance their own beauty.

During your consultation, Dr. Moran will review your medical history and evaluate your area of concern. She’ll work with you to determine if this treatment system is the right option for you. There are several signs that you may be a particularly good candidate:

You’ve Got a Problem Spot or Two

This treatment is ideal for patients who are healthy and close to their goal weight but need a little extra help with a particular area. CoolSculpting can help patients finally achieve the contoured body they’ve been working toward.

You Understand the Treatment

Although patients generally love their results, this treatment doesn’t offer the type of drastic improvement that liposuction or plastic surgery can achieve. Most patients love the subtle improvement they get, but it helps if the individual is realistic about this treatment and what it can achieve.

You Can Commit to a Healthy Lifestyle

Thanks to CoolSculpting, fat reduction has never been so easy. But while this treatment is amazingly easy and effective, it doesn’t stave off all future weight gain. The fat cells that remain in your body after treatment can still expand depending on your eating habits and lifestyle, so weight gain remains possible. To best preserve your new look, it helps if you can commit to a healthy lifestyle.

You Can Wait for the Results

This treatment doesn’t offer patients a fast fix. So if you’re looking for a way to quickly shape up before next month’s college reunion or some other big event, it may not be the best choice.

But if you’re willing to wait for your results, which may take a couple of months to fully develop, this treatment system will reward your patience. What are the Benefits of IV Therapy?

Cognitive function, in the way of thinking and decision making, is closely tied to how we feel physically. We all know when we’re not feeling our best, and when we’re not, we don’t make the best decisions or choices. The improved metabolism and heightened energy levels attained through IV delivery improve mental functioning as well.

A Better Look

The nutrients and antioxidants available through IV treatments have been shown to be clearly visible on the body. IV hydration immediately improves skin tone and suppleness, especially in dry skin that has been damaged by sun exposure. Along with visible improvements in the skin, IV hydration moistens eyes and lips. Nails and hair can become stronger, with increased sheen.

What is the Treatment Like?

The therapy experience is closer to a spa visit than a medical procedure. The idea here is to relax and let the nutrients seep into the bloodstream. Some people choose to make these treatments a regular feature of their lifestyle, recharging on a regular basis. Others use IV recharging as a pick-me-up when they feel it’s needed.

Prior to the insertion of the intravenous line, your specialist will go over your treatment options and determine a mix of fluids that will help you achieve your wellness goals. The sessions, depending on the type, typically take 20-60 minutes: they can literally be performed during a lunch break.

What Can I Expect?

As mentioned, every individual’s needs and goals are different. Clinicians can administer different “cocktails” of nutrients for different patients. Some of the most popular include:

The Myers Cocktail

This is the mixture that started the IV train rolling. It was first concocted by a Dr. Myers in Baltimore and administered in the 1980s. It has remained popular to this day as a quick way to rejuvenate and refresh the entire body. The key ingredients of the Myer’s Cocktail are several varieties of Vitamin B, along with Vitamin C, magnesium and calcium. Many happy patients swear by this mixture, which has been used for everything from hangover relief to energy-boosting before an important day or week.

Immunity Booster

Similar in basis to the Myers Cocktail, IV therapies for improvements to the immune system include all-important Vitamin B complexes, as well as Vitamin C and magnesium. For these treatments, additional anti-oxidants such as selenium and important minerals such as zinc are added to the mixture. This therapy not only helps fight disease: it also helps prevent it.

Stress Relief

The pace and events of daily life produce stress even to the most even-tempered people. Stress is not only a mental problem. It depletes physical nutrients and interrupts other healthy habits like sleep, which can cause larger health problems. In addition to the selected Vitamin B and C therapies, the IV can also include amino acids that reduce stress and help physical performance.

Performance Booster

Many professional and amateur athletes swear by IV treatments. The constant strains put on joints and muscles during activities such as running, cycling, basketball, and tennis, among other activities, damage tissue and deplete our immune system. IV-administered nutrients not only help promote fast healing, but they also provide a greater guard against injuries. One of the IV cocktail ingredients popular for these patients is called Glutathione, which boosts the immune system and endurance.

Ideal Hydration

Our bodies are mostly made of water. But busy schedules often prevent us from nourishing our internal mechanisms with enough hydration. Few people remember the advice to drink 8 glasses of water per day Some of the things we do drink, such as coffee and alcohol, actually serve to de-hydrate us.

Hydration via IV therapy is the most effective answer. In addition to immediate effects, optimal hydration fends off future health problems, such as kidney stones, and helps with day-to-day wellness activities.

Better Skin

Our skin is the largest organ in our body, and the most outwardly telling indicator of our overall wellness. Skin health can’t be accomplished by rubbing on external moisturizing lotions. These only treat the outside of this organ. IV hydration therapy has been shown to be the ultimate moisturizer. The results will not only be felt but also seen, and thanks to IV, can be accomplished in less than an hour.

How Long do the Results Last?

Many people feel the effects of the therapy immediately upon leaving an IV session. The most tangible effects, however, take place over the course of several days. Results like improved energy and lowered stress show up quickly. IV benefits such as improved immune system performance are less easily felt, but their effects are hard at work, nonetheless. The IV treatment should be looked at as a therapy, not a band-aid. Your body will take some time before usefully processing all the IV nutrients.

Who is a Good Candidate?

Anyone can be a candidate for IV infusion therapy. It’s been proven safe and effective the world over for many health conditions. Many people use the therapy as an ongoing part of their health and wellness regime.

Others use the treatment to give themselves a boost when they’re feeling low or want to be at their best for an important event. Some patients find it’s a great pick-me-up, while others use it as a therapy or as part of ongoing cosmetic treatments for their skin and hair.

How Can I Get Started?

While there are many services that offer IV infusion therapy, two factors should play into the choice of location. First, patients will want an environment that promotes the calm and relaxed state they want to be in while receiving the treatment. Mood and setting are important, you should feel relaxed and safe as the treatment is administered.

More importantly, patients will want an expert clinician that will not only make the process painless and comfortable but will be able to help you choose the right mixture of nutrients to achieve your wellness goals. A master at this therapy will know the right nutrient combinations to produce the wanted results. A broad host of health and wellness benefits await the IV patient. Contact us at Dr. Renée Moran Medical Aesthetics, in Newton Centre, MA today to see how this remarkable therapy can change your life!

How Fast Does Dysport Work? Discover the Difference Today!

Wrinkles have a way of getting under our skin, literally. Because wrinkles form when the renewal of skin protein slows, it can be difficult to combat wrinkles and fine lines without a little help. One of the most reliable ways to fight against wrinkles is to introduce the sub-dermal layers of skin to some helping hands to restore a more youthful appearance. At Dr. Renée Moran Medical Aesthetics in Newton Centre, MA, we have found that some of the best helping hands are injectable treatments, such as Dysport. You might want to ask how fast Dysport work?

How Fast Does Dysport Work?

When we weigh the pros and cons of cosmetic treatments, we always end up questioning exactly how fast does dysport work. For aesthetics, it’s all about a speedy, effective delivery. Luckily, Dysport has one of the quickest response times of any injectable treatment on the market. After your treatment, it only takes 2 to 4 days for the results of the injection to become noticeable.

Will You Need Multiple Treatments?

Yes and no. For individual treatment, usually one injection is enough to produce desired results. However, depending on the condition of the area of being treated, it might be necessary to use a greater amount of the injectable solution for optimized results. As to how many treatments you will need overall, you will need multiple treatments to maintain desired results.

How Long do Results Last?

Results for this treatment generally last between 3 and 4 months before the results of the injection begin to fade. The injection will last for only as long as it takes for the body to metabolize the solution. Most patients opt to have this treatment 3 to 4 times a year to maintain results.

Dysport 101

While the speed and longevity of this treatment is plenty to be excited about, there are several other appealing qualities about this treatment that attract prospective patients. Before you call to schedule your appointment, learn all the ins and outs of this special cosmetic treatment.

What is Dysport?

Dysport is a non-surgical, minimally invasive injectable anti-aging treatment. An injectable treatment is one that is performed with a thin needle, which is inserted into the skin to deliver the solution directly to the sub-dermal layers of skin. While injectable treatments are primarily used to treat the symptoms of visible aging, this treatment can be used for patients in their mid-to-late 20s.

How it Works

The main principle behind injectable treatments is to take out the middle man–the topmost layer of the skin, called the epidermis–to treat the sub-dermal layers. For skin, the condition of the hidden dermis is a fair indicator of what the superficial layers of skin will look like. Injectable treatments get right to the root of the problem because they use a small needle to treat specifically targeted areas of the face.

What’s the secret to this particular speedy injectable treatment? The key lies within the injectable solution.

Neurotoxins vs Fillers

As a class of treatments, injectables typically fall within one of two camps; they are either formulated with skin-plumping fillers or muscle-relaxing neurotoxins. Let’s break down their main differences.

Neurotoxins

With 43 muscles in the face, it is easy to see how a constantly pinched facial expression can leave its mark on the skin. Luckily, neurotoxin injections target each of those 43 muscles to help them unclench and relax. When the muscles of the face are relaxed, the skin loses its tension and many of the wrinkles on the skin surface soften or disappear completely. Neurotoxins work by canceling out the neurotransmitters associated with muscle movement.

Fillers

Dermal fillers are mostly concerned with replacing lost volume within the sub-dermal layers of skin. As we age, the natural regenerative abilities within our skin slow to a point where they become unable to hold moisture or maintain the structure of the skin. Dermal fillers are usually composed of naturally occurring solutions to replace what is lost and stimulate further production of new skin proteins, such as hyaluronic acid and collagen.

The Difference Between Dysport and Botox

Many patients are surprised to learn that Botox is very similar to this treatment. In fact, both of these neurotoxin injectables use the same neurotoxin, botulinum, to counter neurotransmitters in the muscles. However, these two injections are not exactly interchangeable. The main difference between these injections is the versatility of use. While this treatment is approved for specific areas of the face, Botox can be used on virtually any part of the face.

Which is Better?

Choosing which of these neurotoxin injectables you should use is something that can be determined by you and your physician. In general, we use this treatment to correct mild-to-moderate appearance concerns. However, it should be noted that while your body will eventually build up a tolerance to the botulinum toxin, the natural resistance to the toxin in this injectable treatment will take longer. As it is, many patients alternate between the use of both neurotoxin injections to prolong results.

What Does Dysport Treat?

This treatment is cleared for specific use between the eyebrows to soften the appearance of glabellar lines. Also called No. 11 lines, glabellar lines are the parallel lines that form between the eyebrows. Glabellar lines are usually the first forehead wrinkles to appear on the face, some forming as early as the mid-20s. Additionally, this treatment is used off-label to treat:

  • Drooping eyebrows
  • Frown lines
  • Crows feet
  • Downturned corners of the mouth
  • Forehead lines and creases

Is this Treatment Safe?

This injectable has FDA approval for the treatment of glabellar lines. Clinical studies have shown that this treatment remains effective for up to 4 or 5 years of consecutive treatments. This treatment is seeking further approval for off-label treatment areas and has a low risk of side effects.

What Can You Expect from Dysport Treatment?

As a treatment that has been cleared by the FDA for less than a decade, many patients are eager to know what they can expect from this treatment. While as a rule of thumb most injectable treatments have the same overall process, there are a few special things you can expect when you have this treatment. At our office, we take pride in our cautious, patient-centered approach to treatment. Here are the main steps of your treatment:

Consultation

You will first need to attend a consultation appointment so that we can determine if this treatment is right for you. We will need to ask several questions, including your expectations for treatment, your overall aesthetic goals, and the areas of your skin that are of greatest concern. We will gather some information about you, such as your general medical history, any medications or supplements you might be taking, any previous dermal filler treatments you have had in the past, and any drug allergies you may have.

You may need to perform an allergy test at the time of your appointment. Allergy tests consist of putting some of the injectable solution on the skin of your inner-arm and waiting to see if you have a negative reaction. Most drug allergies are apparent within 20 minutes of the treatment. If you have no allergic reaction to the solution, we will schedule your treatment appointment.

Pre-Treatment Guidelines

Before your appointment, we will provide you a list of pre-treatment guidelines you will be expected for follow. These guidelines are made with your best interests in mind and will help ensure that your treatment is safe, effective, and successful. Some pre-treatment guidelines will include:

  • Discontinue use of blood-thinning medications
  • Avoid certain herbal supplements and vitamins
  • Do not use Retinol products
  • Avoid salty, spicy, and sugary foods for 48 hours
  • Do not drink alcohol or use tobacco products

If you develop a cold, the flu, or any skin legions such as a cold sore, we ask that you reschedule your treatment appointment. We also recommend that patients wait to schedule this treatment until two weeks after their last cosmetic treatment. You will not need to arrange for transportation after your treatment is finished.

Injections

We will cleanse your face to remove any excess dirt, oil, and make-up. For patient comfort, we do offer a topical numbing cream that can be used to ensure your comfort for the duration of the treatment; please let our staff know in advance if you would like to use this cream. Your injections will be done at targeted treatment sites identified by your treatment plan. This portion of the treatment will take about 30 minutes.

Post-Treatment Guidelines

After your treatment is complete, we will provide you with a list of post-treatment guidelines for you to follow. These guidelines will help you through the recovery time and help make sure that you have optimal results. Some post-treatment guidelines will include:

  • Keep head elevated for at least 4 hours
  • Do not use blood-thinning medications
  • Continue avoiding certain supplements and vitamins
  • Do not use Retinol products
  • Abstain from salty, spicy, or sugary foods for 1 to 3 days
  • Do not drink alcohol or use tobacco products
  • Follow our washing and care instructions
  • Do not use make-up for 24 hours
  • Do not wear hats or headbands

We may give you additional directions to follow, such as advice on how to use cold compresses or the best positions to sleep in. We also ask that patients do not schedule other cosmetic treatments 2 weeks after this appointment.

Recovery

The recovery time for this treatment takes about 7 to 10 days, or until the injection is fully settled into the skin. During your recovery time, it is important to keep your head elevated and to avoid rubbing the skin. Please protect the skin by avoiding excessive heat and sunlight, and always wear sun protection when you go outside. You will be able to return to work within 24 hours.

Results

You will notice results from this treatment within 2 to 4 days after your appointment. Results will continue to improve for 7 to 10 days and will then last for about 3 to 4 months.

Are You a Good Candidate?

The majority of patients who are interested in this treatment make good potential candidates. If you are not satisfied with your overall appearance and would like to restore a more youthful appearance, you are likely a candidate for this treatment. Get a Radiant Complexion with HydraFacial

Recent beauty trends have seen the natural look become more popular, and it’s also true that having an even-toned complexion with a youthful, dewy glow is the goal of any woman regardless of her age. But the fact is that this beauty goal is not one that happens by magic. At Dr. Renée Moran’s Medical Aesthetics in Newton Centre, MA we believe that the key to a radiant complexion is a treatment that might as well be magic – the much-lauded HydraFacial.

Introducing HydraFacial!

What is a HydraFacial? In short, it’s an elevated cosmetic treatment that combines the best of light acid peels and peptide-rich serums to enrich skin from the outside in. This facial uses a blend of traditional steps with the advancements of science and technology to address the root cause of many skin concerns. The popularity of this treatment is rivaled only by its efficacy.

What it Treats

Because this treatment combines the best benefits of other classic facial treatments into one technique, it has the ability to treat multiple skin issues at one time. For many, this treatment is first and foremost an anti-aging facial that helps reverse mild-to-moderate age-related skin concerns. For others, this treatment is the answer to managing even the most severe acne and acne scarring. And for others still, this treatment is simply a way to deeply nourish skin and treat yourself to some well-deserved self-care.

The Hydrafacial is known to treat skin concerns such as:

  • Sun damage, brown spots, and pigmentation
  • Uneven skin texture and enlarged pores
  • Acne and clogged pores
  • Acne scarring and other scars
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Dry skin and mild skin laxity

Why it Works

Regardless of what your main skin concerns are, this treatment is essentially a universal answer to all of your skin-related problems. But why does it work? There are a few reasons why this particular treatment is so effective,  and it all has to do with the science behind the engineering of the treatment systems and the formula of the serums.

Technology

First, this treatment uses a series of proprietary technologies to address key skincare points, such as dry skin and clogged pores. The devices used in this treatment are designed to treat skin gently while also removing impurities. However, unlike other treatments, where these devices might be part of separate systems, the combination of these devices means that each facial treatment is complete by itself.

Acids and Serums

Second, the acids and serums used in this facial are designed to deeply penetrate the skin and nourish the sub-dermal layers. While other treatments may do something similar, this treatment is unique because each step of the treatment prepares skin for subsequent steps. For example, the exfoliation makes way for the chemical peel, which then makes way for the serums. Science drives each step of this treatment, and that is why the treatment works so well.

Why it Might be Right for You

With a universal treatment like this one, you might feel silly wondering if the treatment is right for you. But the fact is that some patients know their skin well and know first-hand that even the friendliest treatments can sometimes do more harm than good. However, with this treatment, there’s no need to be concerned. This treatment is an ideal solution for everyone because it was designed to be gentle on even the most sensitive of skin and can be completely customized to your specific needs.

How Does the HydraFacial Treatment Work?

As with any facial, this treatment has a series of steps that are followed to treat the skin on every level, from the dermis to the epidermis. For the curiosity of our patients, here are the steps you can expect for this treatment.

Consultation

Before you can schedule your treatment sessions, you will need to attend a consultation. While this may be a universal treatment, it is still important for us to speak with you about your expectations and your aesthetic goals as well as examine the condition of your skin to determine your eligibility. We may also gather some medical information about you, such as medications or supplements you are currently taking or any allergies you may have.

Pre-Treatment Instructions

Depending on the type of serums that will be used in your facial, we may prescribe certain skincare products to use to prepare your skin for treatment. It is important to use these products and follow our recommended pre-treatment instructions to get the most benefits from your treatment. Some pre-treatment instructions may include:

  • Use prescribed skincare products
  • Avoid Retinols for 48 hours before treatment
  • Avoid exfoliating for 48 hours before treatment
  • Avoid acne-treating products for 48 hours before treatment
  • Avoid waxing or hair removal treatments for 48 hours before treatment
  • Avoid excessive sun exposure for 72 hours before treatment

We may provide you with additional advice to follow before your appointment, such as directions to temporarily stop taking certain supplements such as Vitamin A or E. You will not need to arrange for transportation on the day of your appointment.

Treatment

If you’ve ever done an at-home facial, then you know that there are several steps involved in a complete facial. Each step of a facial is meant to help clear the way for the deeper layers of skin to be treated. For this treatment, the steps involved will include:

Step One: Cleansing and Exfoliating

The first step of treatment is the use of the Vortex cleanser, which is a combination of cleansing and exfoliating. This step prepares the skin by removing the dead, dry skin from the skin surface and deeply cleaning the skin to unclog pores.

Step Two: Peel

Next is a light chemical peel. A light chemical peel is one that uses acids to penetrate the top-most layers of skin in order to encourage cell renewal and correct superficial skin concerns, such as blemishes. A light chemical peel can also treat acne by eliminating bacteria. For this facial, citrus fruit acids are commonly used at this stage.

Step Three: Extraction

Using the Vortex extraction device, a light suction is applied to the skin that removes impurities from the skin. The extraction step uses a gentle vacuum to totally remove blackheads, whiteheads, and other debris that clogs pores. This step also opens pores for the next step.

Step Four: Infusion

During this step, an infusion of special serums and acids are applied to the skin for hydration and concentrated treatment. The infusion step is allowed to soak into the skin for several minutes to fully nourish the skin. This is the step that is most commonly customized with serums that are selected for your specific needs.

Step Five: Protection

The final step of this treatment is the application of skin protectants, such as sunscreen and additional moisturizers. After a facial, your skin is particularly vulnerable to pollutants and UV rays, so we apply high-grade skin protectants that should remain on your skin for 12 to 24 hours.

Post-Treatment Instructions

From start to finish, your treatment will take about 30 minutes to complete. Afterwards, we will provide you with a list of post-treatment instructions to help ensure that your treatment is as effective as possible. Post-treatment instructions may include:

  • Using prescribed skincare products as directed
  • Avoiding Retinol and certain other products for 48 hours
  • Avoiding excessive sun exposure for 72 hours
  • Avoiding excessive heat and sweating for 72 hours
  • Using sunscreen for 3 to 5 days

Recovery

After your treatment is complete, you are free to return to most normal daily activities. Most patients are recovered from treatment within one to three days, which is when the skin will no longer be as sensitive or vulnerable. During recovery, it is essential to only use the skincare products we recommend since some over-the-counter products may interact negatively with the serums and acids used in the treatment.

Results

Most patients notice an immediate change in their skin, such as a brighter and more youthful appearance. Results from this treatment can last for seven to 10 days at a time, with results being the most noticeable after three days.

Frequently Asked Questions: Is the HydraFacial Effective?

This treatment is effective for the vast majority of patients. If your goal is to reverse mild age-related skin concerns, such as fine lines and expression lines, then this treatment will boost skin volume and correct skin laxity. If your goal is to treat acne and acne scarring, then this treatment will unclog pores and treat acne at the source. Even if your goal is merely to keep skin supple and hydrated, this treatment will do exactly that.

Why is Hyaluronic Acid iImportant?

The hydra part of this facial is credited to the use of hyaluronic acid during the infusion stage. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring compound in the skin that provides moisture and support to the cellular structures within the sub-dermal layers of skin. Hyaluronic acid is capable of holding an incredible amount of water, which is why it is important for keeping skin soft, supple, and smooth.

Are there Long-Term Benefits in this Treatment?

Regularly scheduled facials, such as twice-a-month appointments, will gradually improve skin over time. The more treatments you have, the better the results will be, as the effects of regular treatment will infuse the skin with the necessary nourishment to reverse the effects of aging and acne.

Is this Facial Safe for All Skin Types?

This treatment is safe for all skin types and all skin tones. It is often the case that those with sensitive skin or combination skin types cannot use certain facial treatments for fear of further irritating their skin. It is also sometimes true that those with darker complexions are not able to use treatments that involve chemical peeling because of the higher risk of hyperpigmentation. However, this treatment is designed specifically to be safe for all skin, regardless of age, type, or tone.

Can I Customize this Treatment?

The serums and acids used in this treatment are frequently customized to your exact needs. Common customization options include;

  • Brightalive boost, for even skin complexion
  • GrowthFactor boost, for reducing fine lines and scarring
  • Dermabuilder boost, for improving skin tone and texture
  • Britenol boost, for reducing skin damage

Can I Combine this Treatment?

This treatment is often combined with other types of cosmetic treatments, such as dermal fillers like Juvederm and Botox, dermaplaning, and radiofrequency.

Am I a Good Candidate?

A good candidate for this treatment is any woman who is not fully satisfied with her overall appearance. You may be a good candidate for this facial treatment if you want to correct age-related skin concerns, treat acne and acne scarring, and nourish your skin.

Contour Your Jawline with Kybella

A double chin can be a very difficult thing to get rid of. If you’re one of the millions of Americans who has one and, no matter how much you diet or how many times you visit the gym, you just can’t seem to be rid of it, you might be a good candidate for an injectable treatment called Kybella. This treatment can be completed in an hour or less and allows you to walk right out of our office and get back to your day. If you think you’re a good candidate, read on to learn all about Kybella treatments at Dr. Renée Moran Medical Aesthetics in Newton Centre, MA.

What is Kybella?

Kybella is an FDA-approved injectable treatment that’s used to melt away the fat under the chin, also called submental fat, that forms a double chin. It’s only approved for use for submental far for now, but in its initial clinical trial, 82.4% of people reported significantly improved satisfaction with their personal appearance. In order to understand what this treatment is and how it works, we must first examine how body fat works and why it makes things like a double chin so hard to get rid of.

The Science of Body Fat

Our body fat is stored in fat cells, and you might think that when we gain weight we gain fat cells, and when we lose weight, we lose these cells. That, however, is not the case. In reality, the number of fat cells in our body remains more or less the same post-adolescence. When we gain weight, our fat cells expand to store more nutrient-rich fat. When we lose weight, our body reabsorbs those nutrients, causing our fat cells to shrink.

As a result, areas where fat cells tend to collect can be very stubborn when it comes to showing results from diet and exercise. The belly, the butt, and yes, the chin, can are some of these areas. Luckily, the advent of new body contouring treatments like CoolSculpting, EmSculpt, and now Kybella provides a means of not just reducing, but outright killing fat cells.

How Does the Treatment Work?

Kybella is actually a synthetic version of a compound called deoxycholic acid. This is a bile acid that occurs naturally in the body, where it works to break down fats. When injected into a person’s double chin, deoxycholic acid does its thing, destabilizing and breaking down the fat cells there.

Once the cells are dead, the body slowly flushes them out over the course of a few weeks. Because the fat cells in the targeted area are gone, the double chin can’t return. At least, not easily. Because deoxycholic acid occurs naturally in the body, it’s tolerated well by almost everyone who undergoes this treatment. By melting away the submental fat cells that create a double chin, this Kybella for jawline contour, leaving behind a slimmer profile.

What is the Treatment Like?

When you visit our office in Newton Centre for your first treatment, you might be a bit nervous. After all, it involves several injections directly into your chin. Rest assured, though, that this treatment is not scary and is in fact almost entirely painless.

The Treatment Method

This treatment is administered by our skilled professionals at Dr. Renée Moran Medical Aesthetics. When you come into our office, we will first have to plan out your treatment. This involves drawing a grid on the area of treatment to ensure injections are spread evenly across the area. Then, a numbing agent is applied to the area of treatment. Some practitioners use a numbing cream, while others may use ice packs or local anesthesia. This minimizes any potential discomfort from the injections themselves.

Those injections, though, are administered using extremely thin needles. At most, each injection feels like a tiny pinch. As the deoxycholic acid enters the fatty tissue of the double chin, patients may experience a slight tingling sensation. There is no pain to be had here, unlike with more invasive surgical options.

Each Kybella treatment consists of as few as twenty and as many as fifty separate injections, depending upon the size of the area that’s being treated. Depending on the number of injections, a visit can take as little as twenty minutes and up to one hour or so.

Recovery

Post-treatment, you can expect to experience some mild inflammation in the treated area for a few days. This is not unusual, nor is it really even a side effect; this is the body’s response to the deoxycholic acid, and it means the body has been triggered to remove the fat cells that have been destabilized and killed by the treatment.

Aside from that, you can expect zero downtime post-treatment. In fact, it’s so quick you could pop in over your lunch break, have a treatment, and be back at your desk at work an hour later with no one the wiser. That sounds a whole lot better than the invasive surgical alternatives, doesn’t it?

How Long Until I See Results?

Results from this treatment won’t be instantaneous. It takes the deoxycholic acid a bit of time to work its magic on your fat cells, and it takes the body more time still to process and remove those cells. Most people report seeing results about a month after treatment, with some reporting seeing a noticeable difference in their profile after up to six weeks.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

Most people require more than one treatment to see their optimal results from Kybella. Treatments are spaced one month apart, and the maximum number of treatments one person can get is six. Most people will not require that many, though.

When you visit us at Dr. Renée Moran Medical Aesthetics for a consultation, our professionals will work with you to create a tailored treatment plan based on your chin profile. Most people will see highly noticeable results after two to four treatments, and Kybella’s website notes that 59% of patients in clinical trials received the full course of six treatments.

How Long Do the Results Last?

As mentioned above, the injections kill the submental fat cells that create a double chin, preventing them from storing more fat. Once your desired results are reached, you can expect the results to be permanent. There are some rare exceptions, though. For example, in the event of extreme weight gain, the body can generate new fat cells. A small handful of people will see submental fullness start to return after a while, and for them, the occasional maintenance treatment may be necessary.

For almost all who undergo it, the Kybella treatment is a permanent solution to a double chin.

What Else do I Need to Know?

Some people worry about the appearance of loose skin after a treatment like this. Whether or not that’s a concern for you will depend on your skin and the amount of submental fullness you want to have removed. If it’s a concern for you, you should speak to our professionals about it during your consultation. There are some doctors who believe that a deoxycholic acid injection can actually help moderately improve skin elasticity, though!

Who is a Good Candidate for this Treatment?

This treatment can work wonders on a double chin, but that doesn’t mean it’s right for everyone. For one thing, it’s only administered to those who are age 18 or older. There must be a certain level of submental fat present in order for the treatment to have a noticeable effect. Beyond that, here are a few indicators that you might be a good candidate for this treatment.

You are Unhappy with your Double Chin

If you feel that your double chin is making you look older or heavier than you are and it’s affecting your self-image, this treatment might help you become happier and less self-conscious. As we mentioned above, over 60% of those who went through the clinical trial reported increased satisfaction with their appearance.

You are in Good Overall Shape

As with other body contouring methods like CoolSculpting, it’s important to remember that this is not a weight-loss treatment, nor is it a cure for obesity. People who want to lose weight should speak with their physician and formulate a medical weight loss plan. If, however, you are at or near your target weight and have a double chin that you just can’t shake, you might be a good candidate for this treatment. This is a great option for people who have gone as far as diet and exercise can carry them and want to get rid of that double chin once and for all.

You have Eliminated Surgical Options

Liposuction has its uses, but if you have eliminated costly surgical options that require tons of recovery downtime as an option for body contouring, this treatment is likely the alternative you’ve been looking for.

Who is Not a Good Candidate for this Treatment?

As mentioned above, this treatment is not right for everyone. Here are a few reasons you’d want to think twice before having it done.

You are Pregnant or may Become Pregnant

If you are pregnant, thinking about becoming pregnant, or nursing, you should hold off on this treatment. Injecting chemicals in the body, even naturally occurring ones like deoxycholic acid, while pregnant or nursing is seldom advisable.

You have Swallowing Problems or Difficulty Breathing

As mentioned above, people who undergo this treatment can expect some mild inflammation in the treated area. If you have trouble swallowing or difficulty breathing, your condition could be exacerbated by this treatment. In addition, people taking blood thinners, including aspirin, should speak to their physician prior to having this treatment.

You have a Fear of Needles

It may go without saying, but people who have a phobia when it comes to needles probably should not submit themselves to a process that involves twenty to thirty injections under their jawline!

Conclusion

This minimally-invasive treatment is far less invasive than more traditional procedures like liposuction. There’s no cutting, and the only tissue that’s being removed is being done so through your body’s own natural chemical processes. It’s a safe, reliable, and proven-effective method of getting rid of a stubborn double chin.

Millions of Americans are frustrated with their double chin, so you are far from alone. Submental fat is perfectly normal; in fact, it appears in the vast majority of people over the age of 45. It’s one of the most common indicators of age, in addition to weight gain. However, if you’re struggling with your personal appearance, you don’t have to do so alone. Contact us at Dr. Renée Moran Medical Aesthetics in Newton Centre, MA today to set up your consultation!
